Organization Description:

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides "a different kind of healing" to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually - all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Position Description:

The Director of Finance is responsible for the day-to-day management of The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund’s accounting, reporting, and financial functions. This position ensures that the organization’s financial resources are managed with rigor, transparency, and integrity, in support of HITWGC’s mission to provide camping and healing programs to children with serious illnesses, free of charge. Working in close partnership with the Chief Operating Officer and the executive leadership team, the Director of Finance provides the financial analysis, reporting, and operational oversight necessary to sustain and grow the organization’s work on behalf of the children and families it serves.

Our Director of Finance can expect to...

  • Oversee all accounting, payroll, tax, and financial reporting functions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Support the Finance/Audit and Investment Committee meetings, including agenda coordination with COO.
  • Analyze and investigate significant budget variances; distribute and review results with department heads.
  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, and capital investments in coordination with the COO.
  • Evaluate financial risks and identify opportunities for cost optimization across the organization.
  • Develop and continuously improve financial record-keeping systems, internal controls, and policies and procedures.
  • Provide department budget templates and lead the annual budgeting process, gathering and synthesizing information for presentation to the executive team and COO for consideration and Board approval.
  • Collaborate with the COO and executive team to translate financial data into actionable insights that inform organizational strategy and mission delivery.
  • Support all capital project financial planning.
  • Support the annual audit of HITWGC’s financial statements and the 403(b) defined contribution plan.
  • Coordinate preparation and authorize filing of Form 990 and Form 5500 with applicable government agencies.
  • Coordinate the annual workers’ compensation audit.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state financial regulations and reporting requirements.
  • In conjunction with Development, reconcile monthly bank statements to monthly gift entry and record contributions in Financial Edge.
  • Supervise the Controller and Staff Accountant, providing guidance, professional development, and accountability.
  • Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Our Director of Finance should have...

  • Minimum eight years of progressive experience in financial management with increasing responsibility, including experience in a nonprofit organization.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field is required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • CPA or CMA designation preferred.
  • The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.
  • Deep commitment to the mission of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and to the children and families it serves.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial management practices.
  • Proficiency in Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT or comparable nonprofit accounting software; experience with Salesforce and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience presenting to board committees and senior leadership.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Base office is in New Haven, CT with a hybrid work model.
  • Must be able to operate a computer for extended periods of time with appropriate breaks.
  • A valid driver’s license and driving record which meets HITWGC insurance carrier requirements.
