Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Position Description:

The Assistant Camp Director role is a leadership position at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp's new location in Queenstown, Maryland. This role will aid in the initial set up of the physical site as well as all the programmatic components. The Assistant Camp Director can expect that their job description will grow and change as Maryland Camp grows in scope.

The Assistant Camp Director role is responsible for the day-to-day operations of onsite programing. They provide direct support and supervision to seasonal staff, and full-time staff in the absence of the Camp Director. The Assistant Camp Director helps create and foster a strong interdepartmental sense of teamwork and cooperation. They assist the Camp Director in the process of recruiting, hiring and training of full-time and seasonal staff. The role aids the Camp Director in all aspects of program development, ensuring compliance with all applicable program, safety, and licensing/certification standards. They ensure that all Camp activities and programs are safe, engaging, and are intentionally designed to foster and strengthen our core values of safety, inclusion, friendship, possibility, and gratitude.

Our Assistant Camp Director can expect to…

Communicate and demonstrate the organization's mission, goals, and culture, and lead staff and Campers in creating a social context that honors our core values of safety, inclusion, friendship, possibility, and gratitude.
In cooperation with the Camp Director, hire, train, monitor work performance, plan for the continued professional development and provide ongoing supervision for all seasonal staff and the yearlong Intern/AmeriCorps program.
Work in conjunction with the other members of the Maryland program team to recruit all seasonal staff and volunteers, including advertising at career fairs, interviewing, selection, and completing all hiring paperwork requirements.
Plan and facilitates comprehensive training for all seasonal staff. Ensure specialized trainings and required certifications are completed for all staff in high-risk program areas.
Develop a curriculum and schedule for the Camp intern/AmeriCorps program.
Lead all aspects of programing during assigned family weekends and be "on call" for emergencies during assigned family weekends.
Assist the Intern/AmeriCorps team in the preparation of housing and program areas for all onsite programs.
Maintain up-to-date safety procedures and collaborate with the Camp Director to plan and implement all required safety training and emergency response drills.
Assist the Camp Director in continual planning and execution of enhancements to all programs.
Be responsible for compliance and licensing for the Camp and staff. Establish and maintain policies and procedures for compliance with Federal and State regulations, American Camping Association (ACA) accreditation, and all SeriousFun Network criteria.
Work closely with the Medical Team to ensure the optimal coordination between medical and program activities.
Be responsible for continual review and improvement of behavior development policy and procedure, ensuring that it is integrated into staff and volunteer training and dayto-day guidance of Camper behavior.
Review with the Medical Team any applicants whose needs fall outside the typical Camper profile (psychosocial review).
With the Camp Director, review all "family weekend reports" and relevant "incident reports." Make Camper plans and/or procedural changes as necessary.
Lead difficult conversations with parents and caregivers about any challenges regarding child and family behavior or conflicts that have arisen during programing.
Lead volunteers in various Camp projects as needed.
Assist in the planning and facilitation of other Camp events, such as Camp tours, open houses, etc.
Provide support to the development team in delivering information, tours, and/or accommodation to donors and other friends of Camp. Represent Camp at fundraising or other public events.
Assist the Director of Research and Evaluation in implementing measurement tools to evaluate program success and stakeholder satisfaction for all Camp programs.
Work closely with the Camp Director on creation of the Camp budget and other financial matters. Continual analysis of cost savings opportunities.
Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain current knowledge of best practices in Camp management and in working with Camp's target population.
Proficient use of Camp's salesforce system for tracking camper and volunteer attendance, communication, and general information.
Obtain and maintain current certification at the "trainer" level in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention.
Assist with special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Our Assistant Camp Director should have…

A minimum of five years' experience in program management at one of the following: a Camp, a recreational/afterschool/hospital program, or a school/university program.
A minimum of 3-5 years' supervisory experience.
A Bachelor's Degree in education, psychology, social work, or other related field. Master's Degree strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program delivery and oversight, leading cross-functional teams, and managing multiple projects simultaneously with changing priorities and tight deadlines.
The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.
Flexibility in changing priorities and job responsibilities.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills to diverse internal/external stakeholders, including reports, written communications, and presentations to key audiences.
Thorough understanding of child development and ability to develop and deliver ageappropriate programs.
The ability to skillfully lead and inspire staff on an individual basis as well as in large staff meetings.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Prior knowledge or the ability to learn Salesforce in a timely manner.
Residential requirement during assigned weekend programs, special events, and staff trainings.
The ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to lead, supervise, or participate in Camp activities.
Summer and weekend programs require long workdays (on average 8 am to 9 pm).
The ability to work outdoors in hot and cold weather conditions.
The ability to operate computer for extended periods with appropriate breaks.
A valid Driver's license and driving record which meets HITWG insurance carrier requirements.
The ability to frequently lift up to 25 pounds.
Must be willing to prioritize camper safety by providing your vaccination and physical records to the medical team and getting additional vaccinations, such as the flu shot, on a yearly basis.
