Organization Description:
Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Position Summary:
We are seeking three (3) Full-Time AmeriCorps members for the 2026-2027 service year to serve as Lead Program Specialists. These AmeriCorps positions are enrolled through the Frostburg State University ASTAR program.
The AmeriCorps Program Specialists will be key program leaders at our new program location in Queenstown, Maryland. They will be part of the leadership team and provide support to the seasonal program counselors, aid in the preparation of the new facility, and be responsible for the set up and facilitation of Camp program areas.
Depending on skills and interests, Lead Program Specialists will spend a portion of their work week assisting in organization of the site, leading volunteer groups, and providing office management. Lead Program specialists should expect their role to change throughout the calendar year based on the current needs of the program schedule.
AmeriCorps Requirements for applicants include the following:
- Have a strong interest in serving the community.
- Be able to relate to diverse populations.
- Able to provide copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
- Have reliable transportation.
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien.
- Applicants DO NOT need to be college students; anyone from the community who fits the above and below requirements may participate.
Additional Camp Requirements:
- Commit to one year of full-time 40 hours a week from Sept. 2026 – August 2027.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Be on call overnight, and residential during assigned program weekends.
- Must be physically and mentally capable of working with children and teen campers as well as their adult caregivers.
- Must be familiar with and enforce all safety, emergency, and Camp policies.
- Commit to fostering a community that celebrates our Camp values, which are inclusion, gratitude, possibility, friendship, and safety.
- Ability to work outdoors in hot and cold weather conditions.
- Valid Driver's license and driving record which meets Camp insurance carrier requirements.
- Ability to frequently lift up to 25 pounds.
Position Responsibilities:
- Participate in required on-site orientation and individual program training.
- Assist in planning and facilitating seasonal staff orientations and specific program area orientations.
- Take on a progressing leadership role in family Camp programing.
- Assist in the compilation of necessary certifications for program staff in the following areas: Pool, & Archery. Additionally, be trained in as many of these areas as possible.
- Plan, implement, and facilitate intentional, adaptable, and outcome-based programming for children and families of all abilities and ages.
- Assure program areas remain safe, organized and stocked throughout the program calendar.
- Assist in the organization of the site.
- Assist in volunteer department in hosting volunteer groups.
- Assist in the admissions department in recruiting families as needed.
- Assist in managing the Camp office with phone calls and email responses.
- Organize and facilitate all-camp activities alongside the rest of the Program Team.
- Be prepared to lead and organize a variety of creative games and activities for rainy days and downtime.
- Help create and foster an environment that promotes inclusivity, safety, and participation.
- Learn and help lead communication about program needs, program development, and weather plans.
- Work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by Camp leadership.
Education and Experience:
- Interest in a career withing the Camping, Non-profit or Medical fields.
- Experience with and/or an understanding of residential camp programming preferred but not required.
- Coursework in a related field is desirable, but there is no minimum education requirement.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills; including written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Self-starter with ability to multi-task and prioritize workday/projects independently.
- Computer literacy, specifically MS Office Suite, Outlook and Internet.
Benefits available to the AmeriCorps Member:
- A bi-weekly stipend of $1,062
- An education award of $7,395 for future educational expenses or repayment of student loans - members who are age 55 orolder may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild.
- Federal student loan forbearance while in service, with exemption from paying interest accrued during that time.
- Health insurance and childcare reimbursement, if eligible.
- Camp will provide, optional shared housing onsite during the year of service.
