The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded by Paul Newman, is a nonprofit, year-round center serving more than 25,000 children and families coping with chronic and life threatening illnesses, all completely free of charge. Camp’s goal is to ensure that every child with a serious medical condition has the chance to experience the world of possibilities that Camp has to offer. It’s a community that celebrates the fun, friendship and spirit of childhood where, according to Mr. Newman, every kid can “raise a little hell.” 

Major Function of the Position:

The Medical Director will maintain a high quality of medical care at Camp throughout the year and integrate industry best practices to ensure that the medical care is state-of-the-art, and that all resources are used wisely. The Medical Director will work closely and harmoniously with all departments and will be responsible for all activities that relate to clinical care of the Campers, their families, staff and volunteers.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Provide and oversee medical care for Camp participants, staff and volunteers while Camp programs are in session. Arrange for appropriate medical coverage for those times when not on-site.
  • Manage and work with the nursing director, nursing coordinator and medical advisory council to review all medical policies and procedures including standing orders, medication administration, emergency protocols and procedures, Camper transport policy, infirmary inventory, and infirmary equipment.
  • Steward existing and establish new relationships with referring healthcare teams.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with area resources, including emergency departments, urgent care, and laboratories where campers, families, and staff may be referred.
  • Recruit, hire, train and monitor the work performance of all Medical and Admissions department employees. Support and require continued professional development of the aforementioned staff. Recruit, orient, supervise and evaluate volunteer physicians.
  • Ensure the medical care at Camp is in compliance with all state, national, American Camp Association and SeriousFun Children?s Network standards.
  • Participate in all pertinent Camp meetings to ensure that the medical department and program department are integrated in their efforts, that communication between all departments is open and honest, and that all Camp staff are working together to a common goal of providing medically safe and enjoyable Camp programs.
  • Act as a resource for all medical questions and educate the staff concerning medical issues that impact programming and those we serve.
  • Ensure that all appropriate documentation (camper and staff medical records, data entry in the electronic medical record, incident reports, etc.) are completed on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that the confidentiality pertaining to the medical needs of campers, their families, staff and volunteers is maintained at all times.
  • Act as a member of the crisis response team.
  • Act, in conjunction with the medical team, as the primary contact for staff, families, health care providers and others who have questions about eligibility and/or medical issues regarding campers.
  • Provide medical clearance for seasonal staff and volunteers, in conjunction with the medical team.
  • Ensure that all sessions and weekends are at full capacity considering the commitment to serve children safely.
  • Oversee and together with the nursing director and nursing coordinator, review and approve all camper and family applications for year-round programming.
  • Position would be 1.0 FTE with a partnership with an academic institution. Selected Director could keep their affiliation with their current institution (if applicable) or establish new affiliations with Yale or CCMC.
  • Work with and implement recommendations, policies and suggestions made by medical advisory council.
  • Assist the chief program officer in carrying out the vision for Camp programming. Work collaboratively with all other department heads to provide medical input for integrated and safe program planning and delivery.
  • Implement measurement tools to evaluate program success and stakeholder satisfaction with all Camp programs, in conjunction with the director of research & evaluation. Create and implement changes to further improve and grow programs.
  • Work closely with the chief program officer on the creation and monitoring of the infirmary and admission budgets.
  • Write reports on aspects of the medical programming, as necessary.
  • Assist with special projects and performs additional duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Medical department (staff and volunteer) and Admissions department

Required Education and Experience

  • Certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, Advanced training and certification in pediatric hematology/oncology or pediatric emergency medicine preferred
  • Medical licensure by the State of Connecticut
  • State and national narcotic licensures
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and CPR
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience
  • Leadership/supervisory experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Clinical proficiency with medical procedures, equipment, protocols used at camp
  • Valid driver's license and driving record which meets HITWG insurance carrier requirements. Ability to travel to assigned worksite.
  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literacy, specifically MS Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Sharepoint, Word, Excel, etc.) and Salesforce database
  •  The ability to establish positive relationships with a variety of people in multicultural environments.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Ability to live on site while programming is in session
  • Weekend and evening work required
